The author's whole ambulance unit was captured at Derna in the retreat from Tobruk in 1941. For 7 months he and his colleagues existed in one of the worst German hell camps for POWs in Libya, working 16 to 20 hours a day in the broiling Libyan sun. After 7 months the author was moved to a camp in Italy where he organised educational and religious activities.
