Most sailors hate submarines. The idea of a boat that you sink while you're still in it - and hope that you will come back to the surface again - fills them with horror.
 
Sailors like Lieutenant-Commander Clive Fletcher, for instance. Now way would he climb aboard a sub. Oh no.
 
There again, he didn't reckon on being shot out of the water twice in one day and finding the only alternative to getting aboard was to swim to an enemy-held coast...
