Japanese Prisoner Of War In Revolt: The Outbreaks at Featherston and Cowra During World War II (1978) By Charlotte Carr-Gregg

Approach to understanding the cultural dimensions of the behaviour of Japanese prisoners of war.

Describes the events of the attempted break outs by Japanese POWs at Featherstone in New Zealand and Cowra in Australia, and appraises them from the point of view of the social anthropologist.

The Japanese soldier was taught to fight to the death if necessary using the last bullet or grenade on himself. To die was honorable. To be a POW was shameful and brought disgrace to one's country and family.
