The Coward Of Minden: The Affair Of Lord George Sackville (2008) By Piers Mackesy

In 1759 a battle raged near Minden in which the numerically superior French-Saxon troops suffered a bitter defeat. A British-Hanover-Hessian army smashed the French cavalry and finally forced the invaders to flee. So, very briefly.

The book now illuminates a marginal story: The British cavalry general Lord George Sackville had orders and the chance to outflank the fleeing enemy troops and to turn the tactical victory into a total strategic one.

But he didn't.

Sackville had his first major command there, having previously fought bravely in various other skirmishes. At Minden, however, he was rather hesitant and, thanks to his lack of action, did not turn the day into a loss (the British battalions guaranteed victory) but he also did not ensure total victory. The commander of the Allied troops, Prince Ferdinand, expressed his displeasure about Sackville, which ended his career. But Sackville believed himself to be in the right and applied for a court-martial against him to wash his reputation. That backfired, however.
