In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft North, a maximum security prisoner of war camp designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history, who worked on what became the largest breakout ever attempted. One of the most ingenious and suspenseful films of all time, The Great Escape is epic entertainment. A true story about 600 British and American Air Force officers who worked for a year on the planning and execution of the March 1944 escape is the basis of the film. Although less than 100 prisoners made it out of the camp, it was the largest and most effective mass breakout of POW's in military history.
