Why Do You Strike Me?: The Life and Challenges Of Nikodems Serzants (1978) By Paul MacLeod

 

Nikodems Serzants grew up as the son of a peasant farmer in Eastern Europe. He saw his native Latvia invaded by Russia and was conscripted into an elite Nazi stormtrooper unit of the German Army in World War II. Taken prisoner by the Americans. He escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp and joined the post-war flood of displaced persons. After spending years in camps in Germany and Italy, he migrated to Australia, worked as a laborer on the Great Ocean Road and was finally accepted as a candidate for the priesthood. With his ordination in 1959 at the age of 36. He accomplished a lifelong ambition but soon encountered new pressures and tensions. These resulted in a period of alcoholism, from which he has emerged faithful to his vision and challenging his Church to take seriously the renewal begun by the Vatican Council.
